Unorthodox Magic Cleanup Template
Well, this article's condition is yet to be seen. But I did work a little magic on it. | ||
In accordance with the repetition of the Cleanup of the Month, the Magic articles are currently under a great deal of editing work, and could use your help! We're working on making sure all of the Magic articles have all of the images and animations they need to display; see this forum for more information on how you can help! Analysis of Wikimon's Main Page
In an effort to replace the current main page of the wiki with a far superior one, I am going to be analyzing the structure, format, and contents of Wikimon's parallel page. This is written is a loose essay format. Wikimon is a wiki KrytenKoro observes, which is how it was found to be a highlight of wikis with great main pages. Now, though, we must figure out what of these great things should be integrated into the Kingdom Hearts Wiki, as well as decide what cannot or should not be brought in.
The first thing I notice about Wikimon is the top bar, which has links to different portals. By the way, the portals don't work, but it gives me an idea. If we did something similar on Kingdom Hearts Wiki, visitors would immediately be able to go to a clean and clear (no pun intended) portal featuring whatever category of information they desire. Similarly, each could have its own news section. For example, a "characters" portal would have news pertaining to announcements of new characters or character changes, as well as that of projects on the wiki pertaining to the character articles. Each portal should be headed by an official image fitting for the category. I very much like the idea of portal integration.
Secondly, I notice the order of subjects in the main column--birthday banner, wiki-relevant updates, and then featured article. This is drastically different from KHWiki, in which we simply passed our fifth birthday with little celebration and the featured article is top (again, no pun intended) priority. I can see why we would want to perhaps move news above the featured article, though this would take discussion and consensus from the entire wiki. We will need to analyze the pros and cons of shifting around the subjects' order. I do notice, though, that Wikimon's news section there is very informal. I don't like informal, especially not in a highlighted news section.
Under this, I notice their lesser subjects in the middle column: Recent Changes, Featured Image, and Sites. We don't do Sites, and do not think we should integrate it. If anything, affiliates should be placed there, or perhaps links to the other SEIWA Wikis once that is up and running. KHWiki's imagespace is awfully powerful with all of the ripped images and artwork so I would hate to push it down there. I would like to keep, well, featuring the Featured Image (another pun, another one not intended). We have our Recent Changes in our handy dandy fancy (PUNNY, OOPS) Navigation sidebar, so I don't think we need to transclude that.
HOWEVER. There is one good thing I see here, and that is the "On This Day" template. I have been DYING to add this to KHWiki for months. Literally months. I saw this on another wiki months ago and thought it would be great to integrate into KHWiki's Main Page. How "On This Day" works is that it automatically changes with the day, and displays historic news that happened on that day of the year in past years. All of the displayed news and events of the past are of course relevant to the series, and would require major backtracking research on the editors' parts. If we were to feature it though, where would we put it? Would we drop it down lower like our "Did you know"? Also I had an idea for the "Did you know". What if we converted the right side bar into all of the user-friendly transclusions? We would put Mirage Arena, Featured Media, Quote of the Moment, and Did You Know over there, and the DYK would be simplified to display only one trivia per viewing to fit this. I like it.
To the right, we have the minor column. I notice an updates box. I don't think this would work well for KHWiki; our updates don't always come with nice images to use and I don't want to display scans/stubby news. Plus, our news supply is dry and doesn't show any signs of improving. Pray for Tokyo Game Show 2011 guys, PRAY FOR IT. Another version of important wiki news is here too, but this displays less info than us. I'm assuming the news/update information in the main column was the main news and this just deals with the "Digimon Dictionary" thing. I notice that Wikimon makes a mistake that, in my opinion, KHWiki is also guilty of: hiding the "Create an Article" box. I think this should be displayed initially somewhere visible when the Main Page is first opened, to encourage writing and editing. We might be able to merge Cleanup of the Month and Command Board into here as the text beneath the box. Lastly, the bottom has something like a summarized Command Board, and I don't like this. On that note, we need to decide what we will do about Cleanup of the Month and Command Board.
In conclusion, I do like many of the things about the Wikimon Main Page, though I do not think some of its arrangement is proper for KHWiki to adopt. Of special not, I like how they have more images of subject-relevant content on their main page that are easily visible. This promotes the subject of a wiki more and appeals to the fans. Lastly, I like the UTC clock up at the top of the screen; we could REALLY use that for organizing meetings. In conclusion, Wikimon features a variety of templates and organzation that should be adopted by KHWiki, but certain news boxes and summarized texts should not be integrated.

- And here's my two bits.
- Our intro box should be clearly delineated as a box, rather than looking like leftover trash.
- The Trinity Archives should be moved to the righthand column, and tabbed into "Wiki News" and "KH News". The Mirage Arena box should be merged into the Wiki News bit like the "Digimon Dictionary" bit is on wikimon.
- The Featured Article box should be tightened up so that it has less empty space. The FA image should be much smaller, it's not the featured image. Also, featured articles should not have a huge paragraph -- only the first two or three sentences.
- I'd like Featured Images to be either right below or right to the side of the Featured Article.
- The Command Board, Cleanup of the Month, and Helping Out should be merged into one box, and placed in the right sidebar, under the news.
- I disagree with DTN here, I really like the Site box. If that needs to go up for community discussion, or if we need to hide it near the end of the page, fine, but I think it would be a spectacular idea to have easy links to all of the official sites and affiliates.
- I like "On This Day", though it's maybe not so effective for a game series. It works for Digimon because that one has regular episodes. If we want to have it, though, that would be fine. Maybe listing interviews, or changing to "On this week"?
- Our "Did you know" section needs to be reduced to at most one or two tidbits at a time, randomly chosen on pageload. It takes up entirely too much prominence for being a trivia chest.
- The portals bit -- they use to have a row of images representing each of the main categories of the franchise (cards, video games, characters, etc.), and they linked to the respective categories. We could easily set that up, similar to how our sidebar works."We're werewolves, not swearwolves." (KrytenKoro) 02:20, 4 July 2011 (EDT)
