Um, I was looking at Vexen's boss page, and I clicked the box that listed the optional bosses. It says that in the original Kingdom Hearts the Parasite Cage was an optional boss. I don't recall that. :It's optional in the sense that the entire storyline of Monstro is optional. If you pass through Monstro, then yes, the Parasite Cage is compulsory.
