A normal Shadow has a vaguely humanoid body structure. It has a round, spherical head with circular, glowing yellow eyes. It also has two long, twisted antennae sprouting out of the top of its head. Each of its hands has three clawed fingers, and its feet are large and lack any discernible digits. With the exception of its eyes, this Heartless's body is completely black (with the exception of the Shadows summoned by the Dark Follower, which are dark purple).


The Shadow's name is a reference to a {{w|shadow}}, highlighting its status as the most basic type of Heartless. The name could also be a reference to the Shadow's ability to flatten itself into a silhouette on the ground, and become a literal shadow.

In ''[[Kingdom Hearts III]]'', Shadows function much the same as their previous incarnations, however here they can be forced out of the ground with the usage of [[Water]] magic, and they topple to the ground if ran into. They can be easily defeated within a single combo, making them useful for building up the situation gauge and recovering the HP they drop, especially in the [[Demon Tower]] fight where the cast-offs will drop extra HP when defeated.


A Shadow with a pink aura and especially high health is fought in [[Scala ad Caelum]], and defeating it is necessary to advance. After portions of its health are depleted, it will teleport around the area to distract Sora with other enemies. Defeating this Shadow will grant Sora a fragment of Kairi's heart and move him onto the next area, regardless of how many other enemies remain.

*In the regular ''Chain of Memories'', Atlantica is the only world with Heartless, but without Shadows. In ''Re: Chain of Memories'', Shadows are available in Atlantica only if a Bottomless Darkness map card is used.
*Shadows may possibly be based upon the similarly named enemy from Super Mario RPG, also developed by Square.
