'''Captain Phoebus''' is a character who appears in ''[[Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance]]''. He first appeared in the 1996 Disney film, ''{{w|The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996 film)|The Hunchback of Notre Dame}}''. He is the right-hand man of Judge Claude Frollo, but soon rebels against him and joins forces with Quasimodo and Sora.

Shortly after [[Sora]]'s arrival in [[La Cité des Cloches]], Phoebus alerts [[Claude Frollo]] about the presence of [[Dream Eater|monsters]] running about in the streets, while Frollo interrogates Sora about being a gypsy. From the beginning, Phoebus does not believe Sora to be guilty of any crime, and runs off to aid him against the Dream Eaters. He witnesses Sora defeat the Dream Eaters and save Frollo's ward, [[Quasimodo]]. While Frollo does not approve of this, since he had wanted to teach Quasimodo a lesson for leaving the cathedral, this cements Sora's goodness in Phoebus's eyes, and when Frollo falls for a gypsy girl, [[Esmeralda]] and begins a citywide manhunt for her, Phoebus begins to question his decision to serve Frollo.

Later on, when Frollo orders Phoebus to burn down the house of a miller who has been harboring gypsies, Phoebus turns his sword on the mad judge just as [[Riku]] arrives on the scene. Frollo, however, summons the [[Wargoyle]] and flees. Realising that Frollo may attack the gypsy hideout, the Court of Miracles, Phoebus decides to find it first and warn the gypsies, in the process crossing paths with Sora again. Though Sora is initially hesitant to trust Phoebus after seeing him with Frollo, Phoebus manages to convince the boy that they are on the same side. With help from Quasimodo, Phoebus and Sora find the Court of Miracles and warn Esmeralda, but Frollo follows them and subdues Sora and Phoebus with the Wargoyle while taking Esmeralda prisoner.

At Esmeralda's execution, Phoebus manages to escape from his cage and make his way into the cathedral. As he climbs upwards, he catches Quasimodo from falling to his death mere seconds after Frollo is killed. They reunite with Esmeralda, and Quasimodo blesses Phoebus's relationship with her.

==Design==
Phoebus is depicted mostly with golden armor and blue clothing underneath and a blue cape, and underneath these he wears a white shirt and brown pants. He also sports neck-long blond hair and a small goatee.

==Personality==

Phoebus's personality initially starts out in a fashion similar to his occupation: a captain loyal to Judge Frollo. Unlike Frollo, however, Phoebus possesses good moral judgment, one based on facts, and not on mere appearances and discrimination. Phoebus is a sympathetic and compassionate man, as visible in his defensive and protective actions for the gypsies and Quasimodo. After witnessing Frollo's true dark nature and wicked deeds, Pheobus finally acts on his true beliefs and rebels against Frollo.

Though Phoebus's origin dates back to 1831 in the novel, ''Notre-Dame de Paris'', where he was given the name "Phoebus de Chateupers" and served as one of the novel's primary villains, this incarnation of the character first appears in the 1996 film adaptation, ''The Hunchback of Notre Dame'', where he is drastically changed to a supporting protagonist. In the film, he is summoned to serve as the Captain of Judge Claude Frollo's soldier-like thugs, though his benevolent nature leads him to disapprove of most of Frollo's tyrannical methods, to the point that he claims Sanctuary for [[Esmeralda]] when Frollo tries to capture her inside the cathedral. Eventually, when Frollo reaches madness during his manhunt for Esmeralda, Phoebus finally defies him by refusing to burn down the house of an innocent miller, and is shot and left for dead by Frollo's thugs, but rescued by Esmeralda, who hides him in the cathedral, where they confess their love for each other, which creates a rift between himself and [[Quasimodo]], who also loves Esmeralda. Despite this, they work together to find the Court of Miracles to warn the gypsies of Frollo's imminent attack. In the film's climactic scenes, Phoebus rallies the gypsies and citizenry to fight back against Frollo's tyranny and leads them into battle, where he is able to defeat several thugs, even some at once, and saves Quasimodo from falling to his death along with Frollo.
