There are also other allies who help during certain battles to provide some sort of support, often by opening up new attacks for the protagonist to use.

Party members have individual stats and can be equipped with [[item]]s, [[accessories]], and weapons. Party members have different base stats, {{c|abilities|KH}}, and number of item and accessory slots. Each party member has their own weapon type and cannot equip weapons of any other type. They earn experience and level up independently to [[Sora]] and are rewarded with stat boosts, new abilities, more item slots, or more accessory slots when leveling up. While [[Donald]] and [[Goofy]] are permanent party members, many [[world]]s provide a third ally. World-specific party members have limitations as each of them has only one weapon that they can equip and leveling up solely grants stat boosts. 

Only two party members can be placed in the active party at a time. A menu to swap party member positions can be accessed at [[Save Point]]s and whenever a party member joins or leaves the group. This menu may also be accessed when talking to certain party members after locking their world's Keyhole, including [[Jack Skellington]] and [[Ariel]]. Experience is granted to party members, even if they are not in the active party or they are in another world.

In battle, pressing {{button|t}} causes party members to attack the locked-on target. There are several enemies that are never targeted by party members, including the [[White Mushroom]], [[Rare Truffle]], and [[Black Ballade]].

Some characters must be present in the active party in order to carry out certain actions.

*[[Aladdin]] can "[[Call]]" [[Abu]] to touch Ape Statues out of Sora's reach.

From the "Customize" tab in the pause menu, a party member's AI can be altered to perform actions at different frequencies, which can create specialised fighting styles. There are a number of pre-made fighting styles to select: '''Offensive''' focuses on attack, '''Defensive''' concentrates on recovery and defense, '''Conservative''' preserves MP and items, and '''Balanced''' provides a mix between offense and defense. In addition, each party member has a unique '''Personal''' fighting style and with '''Manual''', the player can create their own fighting style.

Frequencies can be set on a number of different actions and each party member has access to a particular set of actions. Spirit [[Dream Eater]]s act as Sora and Riku's party members and are synthesized out of [[Dream Piece]]s. They each have different stats, abilities, and '''{{a|Ability Link}}''' boards. The new [[Link System]] allows characters to perform powerful techniques with Spirits. When selecting a New Game Plus, Spirits carry over with their stats, only their levels are put to 1, and their Ability Link panels are reset.

Up to three Spirits can be brought into the party at a time, and only two fight alongside Sora or Riku. Spirit positions can be changed within the party by dragging their icons around on the touch screen, replaced with an additional menu panel in ''Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD''. In the "Spirits" tab of the pause menu, Spirits can be placed in and out of the party; experience is only awarded to those in the party. Pressing {{button|shoulderl}} and {{button|shoulderr}} simultaneously or {{button|l3}} will warp Spirit Dream Eaters to Sora's or Riku's side.

If a Spirit Dream Eater's HP falls to zero, the Dream Eater is knocked out and a timer on their icon is displayed, slowly going down from 30 to 0. Once at 0, the Dream Eater expires and drops a [[Dream Piece]], and the third Dream Eater automatically takes their place in combat if present. Sora or Riku can prevent the Dream Eater from expiring by approaching it and using [[Rescue]] by repeatedly pressing {{button|DSA}} / {{button|x}} until the displayed gauge is full, reviving the Dream Eater with half HP. The first instance of Rescue requires 11 button presses; each subsequent knock out in the same battle or area will require additional 10 button presses. While using Rescue, the protagonist cannot stagger at all but can still take damage. If a boss or forced battle ends, the character drops, or moves to another area while a Dream Eater is knocked out, it will automatically get revived with half HP. If the character goes to a save point, the knocked out dream eaters will be revived with their HP fully restored.

All damage dealt by Spirits is halved in comparison to Sora and Riku's commands. Additionally, Spirits are incapable of putting a boss's HP to 0 or defeating the final enemy in a forced Nightmare encounter (Battle Portals aside). Damage dealt to Spirits is dependent on their current HP:

In ''Kingdom Hearts III'', some worlds will have two friends, and all friends remain active.

Rapunzel leaves the party after the main story of [[Kingdom of Corona]] is cleared, and she is unavailable as a friend afterwards.

During certain battles in the story, Sora will be accompanied by '''joint struggle characters'''. These characters behave identically to party members, but have fixed stats, equipment, abilities, and AI that cannot be customized.

When a friend or joint struggle character is incapacitated during battle, they will automatically recover HP after a short while. This process takes 40 seconds for Donald, 35 seconds for Goofy, and 30 seconds for all other party members; this time reduced by one-half if [[Hyper Healing]] is installed and reduced by two-thirds with two copies of the ability. Party members will also recover HP if a [[Team Attack]] is used with them, if an [[Attraction]] is activated, or if the battle ends. Regardless of the method, the party member will come back with 25% of their maximum HP, which increases to 50% with Hyper Healing and 75% with two copies of the ability. HP-restoring items and abilities can also raise party members from the incapacitated state, but they will recover half as much HP as the item or ability would normally restore.

A party member's AI behavior can be adjusted from the "Customize" tab in the pause menu. In ''[[Kingdom Hearts Dark Road]]'', there are a total of six party members (including Xehanort), and the maximum party size is three. Each party member has a specific style that they use in battle. Some Quests require specific party members, while others allow a choice of companions; depending on which party member is chosen, some cutscenes are slightly altered. Once all Quests are completed, Eraqus is permanently assigned to the party alongside Xehanort.
