| ==Design==
| |
| Because of the curse, Lumière takes the form of a gold, three-branched candelabrum, with the circular base acting as his foot, which he hops around on, and the central column acting as his body. The two side branches of the candelabrum act as his arms and are attached to the central column just below the base of the main candlestick; Lumière's head. There is a short, white candle in each of these side arms, both of which are usually lit. The main candlestick is also white and lit, but is much longer and has a small amount of wax melting at the top, resembling his hair. Lumière has brown eyebrows, oval-shaped, close-set eyes, and straight, white teeth. The base of the candlestick acts as both Lumière's neck and his lower jaw.
| |
| | |
| Lumière is the French word for "light", apt for his role as a candlestick.
| |
| | |
| ==Personality==
| |
| Lumière is the slightly rebellious and flaunty friend of Cogsworth, and servant to the Beast. Lumière is the exact opposite of the strict Cogsworth, instead having a more carefree attitude. Like the other servants, Lumière is hopeful in Belle, believing she will be the one to break the enchanted spell.
| |
| | |
| ==Abilities==
| |
| Lumière has no specific abilities, but he is able to light the three lamps in the Secret Passage in Beast's Castle, with the help of Cogsworth, alongside Sora and Mrs. Potts. Lumiere asks "Is this the spot?" before lighting a lamp. He also lights the way in the Dark Hall in Beast's Castle so that Sora can see better in it.
| |
| | |
| ==Origin==
| |
| Lumière originated from Disney's 1991 animated musical film, Beauty and the Beast, voiced by the late Jerry Orbach. In the film, Lumière and the other castle's residents were turned into household objects (in Lumière's case, a candelabra) by an enchantress as punishment for the Prince's cold heart. Many years later, Belle's father, Maurice, stumbles in the castle to escape wild wolves, and Lumière and the other servants warmly welcomes him. However, the prince (now known as the Beast) discovers this and locks Maurice away in the dungeon while Lumière and the others sadly watch. When Belle comes to the castle in search for her father, Lumière guides Belle to dungeon to see him. After Belle offers to be the Beast's prisoner in place of her father, Lumière advises his master to show Belle to her bedroom. On the night that was Belle was supposed to have dinner with Beast, Lumière and Mrs. Potts attempt to teach Beast how to act like a gentleman, a task that was quite difficult. When Belle refuses to go, she later journeys into the dining room and Lumière performs a song to entertain her.
| |
| | |
| Later, Lumière and Cogsworth provide Belle with a tour of the castle, warning her that she is free to go anywhere but the West Wing. Throughout the rest of the film, Lumière and the other servants observe Beast and Belle's budding romance, giving them hope that curse will be broken and they will revert into humans. However, Beast releases Belle so she could go care for her sick father, prompting Cogsworth to inform Lumière and the others of the sad news. When Gaston storms the castle with angry villagers, Lumière and the others defend it. Once Beast and Belle confess their love for each other, the curse was broken and Lumière and the castle's residents transform back into humans. At the ball that was being held to celebrate, Lumière and Cogsworth got into another argument about who foretold the fact that Belle would break to spell first, which quickly escalates into a brawl.
