At the start of the film, Hans arrives at Arendelle on the day of Elsa's coronation to claim the throne. He initially intends to marry Elsa, but he soon sets his sights on her younger sister Anna, who falls in love with him and agrees to marry him immediately due to her sheltered life and naïveté. However, as Anna had just met him, Elsa vetoes the marriage, and after an argument accidentally freezes all of Arendelle. Anna places Hans in charge while she sets off to find Elsa. Hans soon proves to be a benevolent ruler, but when he learns that Anna has gone missing, he ventures into the winter and captures and imprisons Elsa, seemingly to end the eternal winter. Anna suddenly returns, slowly freezing to death due to Elsa's powers, but Hans reveals his true colors, explaining his intent to kill Elsa and conquer Arendelle as his own. Elsa escapes her prison, and Hans tracks her down and claims that she was indirectly responsible for Anna's death. As Elsa collapses in despair, Hans prepares the killing blow, but Anna leaps in front of his sword and freezes, sending him reeling and knocking him unconscious. After Elsa restores Arendelle to normal, Hans regains consciousness and is confronted by a restored Anna who punches him into the fjord. He is soon arrested and imprisoned to face punishment from his older brothers. | At the start of the film, Hans arrives at Arendelle on the day of Elsa's coronation to claim the throne.
