Episode 42: Beyond the Door, also called Episode 42: Behind the Door, is the forty-second chapter in the Kingdom Hearts manga.

The back page shows the drawing in the Secret Place by Sora and Kairi.
Synopsis
The door to Kingdom Hearts has opened, releasing several strands of darkness. Before Sora can seal the door, Ansem claims that the Keyblade alone cannot seal Kingdom Hearts. Ansem slowly has the group engulfed in darkness. Just before they are consumed, Sora argues that the heart's true essence isn't darkness. He continues, claiming that although the heart may be weak, deep inside there is a light that never goes out. Sora finishes, stating that Kingdom Hearts is really light. Immediately the doors to Kingdom Hearts burst open, completely swallowing Ansem in light.

Story
With Ansem gone, the trio sets out to seal the door to Kingdom Hearts. While trying to close the door themselves, the group quickly determines they cannot do it. Riku then appears, saying it will take Keyblades on both sides to seal the door. While working on closing the door, King Mickey arrives, ordering Sora to help him seal the door. Sora questions what will become of Riku and the King, only to be told that there will always be a door to the light. Before the door is sealed, Riku asks Sora to take care of Kairi. With Sora on one side, and Mickey on the other, the two successfully seal the door.
Ansem, Seeker of Darkness opens the door to Kingdom Hearts, to absorb the darkness within. Sora, Donald, and Goofy try to stop him, but are held back by the darkness. Then, Sora exclaims that there is always a light inside a heart, so Kingdom Hearts has to be light, as well. A blinding light comes through the door, evaporating Ansem. Sora, Donald, and Goofy try to close the door, but it is too heavy. Riku appears from the other side of the door to help close it. Several Heartless appear behind the door, but they are defeated by King Mickey. As King Mickey assures Sora there will always be a door to the light, and Riku tells Sora to take care of Kairi, they close the door, and seal it with Sora and King Mickey's Keyblades, causing the door to disappear.

Sora spots Kairi behind him, but before she can explain how she got there, the ground beneath them separates. Sora promises to return to Kairi, as she returns to the recompleted Destiny Islands. Stars are flying through the sky, showing all worlds returning to their place. While exploring the Secret Place, Kairi sees the drawing she and Sora made, where Sora added a paopu fruit from him to Kairi, and adds a paopu fruit from her to Sora.
Just as the group is about to leave, they see Kairi standing alone. Sora runs to her, asking how she got there. Before Kairi can explain, the land between the two shifts, forcing them apart. Before the two are completely separated, Sora promises to return to Kairi one day.

Sora, Donald, and Goofy walk along a long road when they spot Pluto carrying a letter with King Mickey's seal. Pluto runs off, and the three chase him.
Kairi watches from the beach as the worlds return. Later, in the Secret Place, she looks fondly at the cave drawing Sora drew of returning Kairi's good luck charm.

Worlds and characters
Meanwhile, Sora, Donald, and Goofy walk along a hilly road. Sora tells Donald and Goofy that their mission now is to find the King and Riku. Suddenly, Pluto appears, holding a letter with the King's seal in his mouth. Pluto flees, forcing Sora, Donald, and Goofy to pursue, as a mysterious voice reiterates that Sora is the one who will open the door to the light.
