'''Ventus''', also known as '''Ven''', is one of the main protagonists in ''[[Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep]]''. He was a originally a [[Keyblade wielder]] and [[Union]] leader from age of fairytales. He was transported into the future with no memories of his original life, and apprenticed to both [[Xehanort]] and [[Eraqus]]. He is the youngest of the trio formed by himself, [[Terra]] and [[Aqua]].

Ventus's [[heart]] is severely damaged by the creation of his dark counterpart, [[Vanitas]], and then again when the [[χ-blade]] forged from their hearts is destroyed. Both times, [[Sora]]'s heart reaches out to mend Ventus's heart, and by the end of ''Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep'', Ventus's heart has gone to sleep within Sora's so that it can recover until it is fully healed and ready to rejoin his [[body]], which lies comatose but safe within the [[Chamber of Waking]]. Ventus is later woken from his slumber and returns to training with Terra and Aqua in the Land of Departure, and he is reunited with his [[Chirithy]] from the distant past.

Ventus is the host of one of the original thirteen {{c|Darkness|character}}es and the physical template of [[Roxas]].

Like all the others, Ventus awakes as a [[Keyblade]] wielder in [[Daybreak Town]], where he joins one of the Unions under the [[foreteller]]s. While fulfilling his duties as a Keyblade wielder, Ventus finds it difficult to develop friendships due to his timid demeanor. Over time, he is inducted into the [[Dandelions]] by [[Ava]] to escape into the new world. However, he was tricked by the [[Darkness (character)|Darkness]], who disguised themself as Ava, to meet at the abandoned warehouse. When Ventus arrives, he is possessed by Darkness, who then uses Ventus to strike down [[Strelitzia]] and steals her [[rulebook]]. Upon leaving, Darkness leaves Ventus and poses as Ava, telling him that he is to be a future [[Union]] leader.{{storylink|Quest 730: Target: Silver Hammer Frame Pt. 2}}  

Alone, Ventus asks for Skuld's opinion on what Brain said, with her suggesting that Brain knows what he's doing, but questioned why the Dandelions avoided the Keyblade War if they were destined for ruin anyway. He then suggests that they talk to Ephemer about this, but just then, a glitch triggers a projection of Ava and the [[Master of Masters]], where they discuss which Union Leader meant to inherit the copy of the Book of Prophecies. Seeing this, Ventus immediately asks where Brain is, leaving to get him from the Control Room.{{storylink|Quest 861: Trouble at the Tower? Pt. 1}}

Continuing to look for Brain, Ventus entered near the forbidden area of the tower then met Ephemer who was surprised to see him and explained what's going on. Then, was introduced to [[Player]] as well as sought Brain who was in the control room but before entering the trio was attacked by [[Darklings]] and once defeated the group makes their way inside.{{storylink|Quest 870: Clock Tower Investigation Pt. 5}}

Ventus was disappointed that he wasn't chosen to be a Union leader despite everyone believing his innocence. Further understanding that someone or something threw a problem into Ava's plans the others believed that Darkness posed as her, killed Strelitzia and gave Ventus her book. Then he was pushed by Brain to remember his encounter with Master Ava, clarifying that they met at a dim light house, left together and talked on their way near the clock tower but couldn't remember anything else. However, Ventus grabs his head in pain where he vaguely sees Strelitzia dying horrified that he may have done something to her, but was comforted by Brain as they plan to tell Lauriam about his sister's intended role back at the clock tower.{{storylink|Quest 935: Heartless in the Hideout Pt. 3}}

After a hard fight with Darkness, Ventus wakes up to his friend's surprise and uses the [[light]] within his heart to destroy the Darklings. Claiming if the entity is pure [[darkness]], then he is pure light aware that Darkness used him to change it's form Ventus knew he could do the same giving it entity a form the others could defeat but was briefly held back by a concerned Lauriam. And yet, he told him everything would be fine before attacking the Darkness alone.{{storylink|Quest 977: Darkness Looms}}

The fight against Darkness leaves Ventus unconscious and being watched over by a remorseful Lauriam. He is carried by Lauriam to the basement below and during the discussion amongst the union leaders. They are worried about the state of the real world but not wanting to leave the remaining Dandelions behind. For his safety Ventus leaves with [[Elrena]], Brain and Lauriam for the real world using [[Lifeboat]]s while Ephemer, Skuld and Player remain behind.{{storylink|Quest 978: What Comes After}}

Ventus and the other Union leaders arrive to the real Daybreak Town to find it on the verge of destruction. They decided to travel into the future, leaving [[Brain]] behind to wait for the others. Ventus ends up separated from his friends and unconscious on the Keyblade Graveyard, where he is found by Master Xehanort.{{storylink|Quest 979: The Final Battle}}

Ventus served as Xehanort's apprentice, as part of the elderly Keyblade Master's plans to forge the legendary χ-blade. However, Ventus proved to be a poor candidate, and when he refused to use his [[darkness]] to fight several [[Neoshadow]] [[Heartless]] in the Keyblade Graveyard, Master Xehanort finally lost patience with him and used his own Keyblade to unlock and extract the darkness from Ventus's heart, using it to form a being of pure darkness who was then named "Vanitas" by Master Xehanort.

Unfortunately, the process left Ventus in a comatose state, with his broken heart of pure light slowly fading out. Xehanort then took Ventus to the [[Destiny Islands]] to allow him to live out his last days peacefully. Ventus was sent to the [[Dive to the Heart]], where he came in contact with the heart of a newborn Sora. After a brief discussion, Ventus's heart connected with Sora's, halting its deterioration and allowing Ventus to stay alive until he someday becomes strong enough to repair the damage by himself. Ventus then summoned a Keyblade and shot a ray of light into the sky above, much to Xehanort's surprise. Xehanort decided that Ventus could still be of use in his master plan, but with Ventus still too weak in comparison to Vanitas, the two boys could not be trained under him since Vanitas had a naturally strong impulse to destroy Ventus.

Aqua later places his body in [[Chambers of Repose and Waking|a chamber]] and transforms the Land of Departure into [[Castle Oblivion]]. Though Ventus's heart was initially lost in darkness, Sora was able to sense Ventus's pain due to their previous encounter. Sora, with encouragement and guidance from Riku, called out to Ventus's heart and safely guides it to himself. After a brief conversation in Sora's Station of Awakening, Ven asks Sora if he could stay with him while he slept, to which Sora happily accepted. When Sora learns that Kairi's heart has taken refuge within his own heart, he uses the [[Keyblade of heart]] to free hers, which also releases his and creates his Nobody, [[Roxas]]. [[Xigbar]] sees [[Xion]] (an imperfect [[replica]] created from Sora's leaked memories) as Ventus. Xigbar states that Ventus had always looked at him as if he had "drowned [his] goldfish" before he is defeated by Xion. When Sora arrives at The World That Never Was, he is caught by the Organization and placed within a nightmare in which he chases after memories of Riku and Kairi. When he catches up to them at the [[Contorted City]], the phantoms suddenly take the form of Terra and Aqua, while Sora himself takes on Ventus's appearance. Sora is confused, but the phantoms attempt to grasp his hand before turning back into Riku and Kairi and walking off again. As Riku attempts to wake Sora on his own side of the dream, a memory of when Aqua came to Destiny Islands is manifested, and nearly wakes Sora up.

While venturing across space in the [[Gummi Ship]], Sora and company are contacted by [[Ienzo]] with some news. He had deciphered part of [[Ansem's Code]] and discovered that Sora has three unique hearts within his own heart. They identify two of them as [[Roxas]] and Ventus, but do not realize the third heart is [[Xion]]'s.

With their clash against the seekers of darkness imminent, Aqua and Ventus take time to stargaze outside. Ventus uses this moment to admit to Aqua that while he was sleeping, he would have dreams of her, Terra, Sora, and the others. He also expressed memories of [[Dream Eaters]] from Sora's adventures. Aqua says that she's been places too, but she can't wait until things are back to the normal. Ventus and Aqua hold their Wayfinders to the sky, promising to share their stories with Terra after they save him.

The guardians of light are subsequently separated by Xehanort when he creates [[The Skein of Severance]] between them. Ventus and Aqua are drawn into battle against Terra-Xehanort and Vanitas, and when Sora arrives they are able to destroy Vanitas. However, when they attempt to reach out to Terra, Xehanort uses the emotional bonds between them to create physical chains imprisoning them, and attempts to execute them with a brutal impact. Ventus sheds a tear, feeling he has failed his promise to Terra, but Terra-Xehanort's shadow breaks free of its restraints and reveals itself as Terra's heart, breaking the chains on Ventus and Aqua and declaring that it will set things right. Sora then steps in to unlock Terra-Xehanort's heart, in order to release Terra's heart from Xehanort's control and allow the shadow to reclaim Terra's body, restoring him. Aqua, Terra, and Ventus then share in a tearful reunion, happy to be together again for the first time in over a decade.

Ventus's outfit is strikingly similar to Roxas's own [[Twilight Town]] clothes. He wears a jacket that resembles a fusion of Roxas's jacket (white on the right side) and Sora's jacket in ''Kingdom Hearts II'' (black on the left side), also reminiscent of the Yin and Yang symbol. The collar of the jacket is red and pleated, again, similar to the collar on Roxas's own jacket. Underneath this, he wears what appears to be a grey vest with a single button and several white, angular patterns on it. He wears a third layer under this, in the form of a plain, high-necked, black shirt. He also has a chunk of dull green and grey blue armor on his midsection that appears to be under his vest, and another piece of armor on his left shoulder.  

Ventus's pants are also similar to the pants Roxas wore, though Ventus's balloon outward slightly before closing up about halfway down his legs, similar to Sora's pants in ''Kingdom Hearts II''. These pants are colored in shades of grey, black, and white. He also wears an ornate, dull green and grey blue piece of armor on his upper-left arm, along with a black and white checkered wristband that is, once again, strikingly similar to Roxas's, but with white edges as opposed to Roxas's black-edged wristband. Like Aqua, he wears two criss-crossing straps on his chest, on which he wears a silver Keyblade Master emblem. His boots are rather odd when compared to Terra’s and Aqua’s, as they resemble an armored version of normal street shoes in shades of dark bluish grey, dull green, and red.

When touching the piece of armor on his shoulder, Ventus becomes fully clad in [[Keyblade Armor|armor]]. In ''{{c|Birth by Sleep|video}}'', Ventus's suit of armor is mostly colored in shades of light steel blue, black, gold, red and chartreuse. Ventus adds a greyish-blue cape to his armor that looks discolored, almost appearing rusted. The armor on his knee is gold and bears a sharp, upward-pointing hook on the outer side of each one. His gloves are a shade of brown, and the black mask on his helmet has a slight orange tint. Ventus's helmet has a notably different design from Terra and Aqua’s, appearing more squashed and flat at the top. His helmet also has two prongs on either side of his head which point backwards and angle diagonally upward. In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Ventus's armor remains largely unchanged, though He loses his cape.

Out of the main protagonists of ''Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep'', Ventus is the most balanced fighter in the game. He’s also fastest and most agile, which reflects in his primary fighting style of dodging, quick movements and swift combo attacks. Ventus has an affinity for the wind and [[Light]] elements and mixes both into several of his techniques and magic attacks. Unlike most Keyblade wielders, Ventus wields his Keyblade, [[Wayward Wind]], in a reverse grip. Ventus's primary battle style consists of very fast, wide backhanded strikes with his Keyblade in quick succession to deal damage. His single strikes aren't as powerful as Sora's two-handed strikes or Terra's powerful blows, but his ability to attack quickly makes up for his lower attack power.

Ventus also has access to two unique Shotlocks, as well as a third just for storyline purposes. The two freely usable Shotlocks are the light [[Pulse Bomb]] and [[Multivortex]]. The third exclusive Shotlock is [[Dark Link]], which can only be used when in [[D-Link]] with Vanitas in Ventus's final battle.  

Ventus becomes a D-Link for Terra and Aqua after leaving the Land of Departure. While in link with Ventus, they can unleash quick attacks and Aero magic.

Ventus's Keyblades are primarily balanced in terms of attack and magic power. His versions of common Keyblades are shorter in length compared to Terra and Aqua's; this helps him better wield them in his signature backhand style. In the age of fairy tales Ventus used the Keyblade Missing Ache in its third form. By the time he became Master Xehanort's apprentice he was using Wayward Wind. Ventus has three exclusive Keyblades; his default Keyblade, Wayward Wind, along with Frolic Flame and Lost Memory. Frolic Flame is obtained after Ventus meets Lea and Isa, and Lost Memory is received when Ventus remembers his past on Destiny Islands. Ventus is also seen playing with a wooden sword and Terra's wooden Keyblade, however he is never seen wielding either of them in combat.
