Olaf first appeared in the 2013 Disney film ''Frozen'', voiced by Josh Gad. Originally, Olaf was a snowman created by Elsa for Anna when the two were little, but collapsed after Elsa accidentally froze Anna. Thirteen years later, Elsa recreates Olaf when testing her powers, but unknowingly brings him to life. Olaf eventually crosses paths with Anna and Kristoff and follows them in their journey to find Elsa. He does not have a significant role in the story, often the source of comic relief, although he does save Anna's life after Hans locks her in a room and leaves her to perish.

Until 2019, Olaf was voiced in the Japanese version of the ''Frozen'' franchise by Pierre Taki. In March, Taki was arrested on suspicion of cocain use. In response, Square Enix announced that Taki's performance as Olaf in ''Kingdom Hearts III'' would be replaced via patch. Disney will also be recasting Olaf for all future media in Japan, including the Japanese dub of the then-upcoming ''Frozen II''.<ref>https://www.khinsider.com/news/SE-plans-to-replace-Olaf-s-JPN-voice-actor-in-KH3-amid-drug-scandal-14779</ref>
