Hans Westergaard first appeared as the main antagonist of the 2013 film ''Frozen'', voiced by {{w|Santino Fontana}}. He is a prince of the Southern Isles and the youngest of thirteen brothers, three of whom pretended he was invisible for two years. As the youngest in line for his own kingdom, Hans has harbored a desire to claim the throne of another kingdom for himself.

At the start of the film, Hans arrives at Arendelle on the day of Elsa's coronation to claim the throne. Though he initially intends to marry Elsa, he soon sets his sights on her younger sister Anna, who falls in love with him due to her sheltered life and naïveté. After Elsa freezes all of Arendelle, Anna places Hans in charge while she sets off to find Elsa. Hans soon proves to be a benevolent ruler, but when he learns that Anna has gone missing, he ventures into the winter and captures Elsa, seemingly to end Elsa's eternal winter. Anna suddenly returns, having been cursed by Elsa, but Hans reveals his true colors, explaining his intent to kill Elsa and conquer Arendelle as his own. Elsa escapes her prison, and Hans tracks her down and claims that Anna has seemingly died due to Elsa's actions. As she collapses in despair, Hans prepares the killing blow, but Anna sacrifices herself and blocks Hans's sword as she freezes, sending Hans reeling and knocking him unconscious. When he comes to, Elsa has restored Arendelle to normal. A restored Anna confronts him and punches him into the sea, and he is imprisoned to face punishment from his older brothers.
